Morning vs Evening Workouts: Which Is Better?

Did you make time and squeeze in some exercise this morning? Or do you prefer to get moving later in the day?

If you’re an avid exerciser, you may have heard that exercising at a certain part of the day was beneficial. While some people get up at dawn to get their workout in, others can’t imagine exerting themselves before noon.

No matter what time you work out, it’s a good thing. And there are benefits and drawbacks of working out in the morning vs night.

Let’s take a look at the pros and cons of exercising at different times of the day.

Benefits of Working Out in the Morning

You may have heard of the benefits of early-morning workouts. There are some distinct advantages to a morning sweat session.

Consistency

Your level of consistency comes down to a combination of time and tenacity. Many people find it’s easier to stay consistent when they work out in the morning.

You may have good intentions to exercise after work, but life tends to get in the way. Things pop up, and before you know it, your workout plans are out the window.

An early-morning workout is first on your to-do list. It helps eliminate the possibility of distractions getting in your way.

Focus

Many fitness experts believe that training early in the day can help improve your focus. Morning workouts can be a great way to start the day on a positive note.

You feel good that you’ve exercised, and this positive energy can carry over into your day. For many, a morning workout helps elevate mood and improve focus for the day ahead.

Lose Weight

Working out consistently at any time of the day or night can help you lose weight. If you’re more likely to follow through on your workouts first thing in the morning, that consistency of routine can help you lose more weight.

Sleep

Nothing is more important to your body than regular restorative sleep. If you power through a workout at night, it can have an effect on your sleep.

After an intense workout, your body needs time to wind down. If your only option for exercise is a late-night workout, your body has to adjust before you can drift off to sleep.

A morning workout lets you enjoy the exercise high without the need for counteracting the effect.

Benefits of Working Out in the Evening

It’s not just the early-morning exercise warriors who benefit from a good workout. Working out at night has its fair share of benefits too.

More Alert and Energized

Do you feel like a zombie when you attempt a morning workout? You’re not alone.

Many people don’t enjoy exercising in the morning. When you’re sleepy, your coordination and endurance may not be at their peak. This can make a workout feel like a chore.

An evening workout may be more your speed. You have the day to fuel your body and build your energy before you start your workout.

Burn Off Steam

Some exercise enthusiasts love an evening workout because it helps them burn off steam from a hectic workday. Exercise can be a great stress reliever.

A regular evening workout can be the perfect way to mark the end of the day and transition into your personal time.

Work Out Longer or Better

If you’re pressed for time in the morning, you may have a tendency to cut your workout short. If you have more time in the afternoon or evening, you may work out a little longer and harder than you would otherwise.

If you’re super rushed or stressed in the morning, a later workout may be the perfect solution for you.

More Accountability

Your early AM workout may be a solo affair. When it’s just you to worry about, you may be tempted to hit the snooze button or skip your workout altogether.

It can be hard to find a friend willing to work out with you at the crack of dawn. It’s much easier to find someone willing to meet you for an afternoon or evening workout

This can help keep you accountable and motivate you to show up for sweat sessions. Although some people prefer to work out alone, others love the camaraderie of having a workout buddy along.

What Time Is Best For You?

If you’re not sure about the best time of day to exercise, switch up your routine and find out. Ask yourself:

  • Are you energized and ready to crush your workout in the morning?
  • Do you have more energy in the evening?
  • Does morning exercise make you feel more focused or energized?
  • Does a morning workout make you tired for the rest of the day?
  • Does your workout time affect your sleep?
  • Do you sleep better when you work out in the morning or evening?
  • What workout time fits your personal schedule and life better?

The Best Time Is the Same Time

There are advantages and disadvantages to morning and evening workouts. The key is finding what works best for you and sticking with it.

Training at the same time every day makes it easier to stick to a routine long-term. Your brain and body adjust to your workout time, and this helps give you the energy and strength to get through your workout.

If you get off schedule and can’t exercise at a certain time, it’s okay. All forms of exercise at any time of the day will benefit your body, mind, and spirit.

Working Out for Life

Working out is good for you no matter what time you do it. There are benefits of working out in the morning and working out in the evening.

The key is consistency. Whether it’s morning, noon, or night, be sure to get moving and don’t give up.

Exercise has so many health benefits, and it’s fun!
